A behind-the-scenes power struggle may hold the answer. Read the full story here.
Sean “Diddy” Combs’ high-profile legal battle has taken an unexpected turn as his attorney, Anthony Ricco, has officially withdrawn from the case - just weeks before the trial was set to begin.
Ricco, one of six lawyers representing Combs, filed a motion to step down, stating, “Under no circumstances can I continue.”
With Combs facing serious charges of sex trafficking and racketeering, his legal defense is now in flux. But who is Anthony Ricco, and why has he abruptly walked away from such a major case?
Who is Anthony Ricco?
Like Diddy, Harlem native Ricco built a long-standing reputation as a defense attorney specializing in high-profile criminal cases.
Earned a BA in Political Science from Adelphi University in 1978.
Graduated from Northeastern University School of Law in 1981.
Recognized for his work in death penalty cases and criminal defense advocacy.
Honored by the New York State Bar Association and New York County Lawyers Association for his contributions to the profession.
Notable Cases: Who Has Ricco Defended?
Ricco has worked on some of the most controversial cases in U.S. history, often defending those facing the death penalty or federal terrorism charges.
Osama Bin Laden’s Associates: Ricco was part of the defense team in cases related to the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania. His defense strategy helped one defendant, Mohamed Odeh, avoid the death penalty.
Andre Cooper: A gang member convicted of multiple crimes, including murder, whose death sentence Ricco successfully had commuted to life imprisonment.
Jelani Soloman: Ricco also argued against the death penalty for Soloman, securing a life sentence instead.
Sean Bell Case: Ricco represented Detective Gescard Isnora, who was involved in the fatal 2006 police shooting of Sean Bell. The officers were acquitted of all charges, sparking national debate over police accountability.
Why Did Ricco Suddenly Quit Diddy’s Case?
Ricco, a seasoned attorney known for representing high-profile clients linked to Osama Bin Laden, has sparked speculation with his sudden departure from Combs' case. His exit has many wondering if a major development prompted his decision.
A Power Struggle Behind the Scenes
According to TMZ, sources close to the case reveal that Anthony Ricco's departure stems from ongoing disagreements with lead attorney Marc Agnifilo over how to handle the sex trafficking allegations. While Agnifilo has maintained that all encounters were consensual, Ricco reportedly had differing views on the best legal strategy.
Ricco reportedly became frustrated when his attempts to speak directly with Diddy were blocked by co-counsel. Additionally, he believed the legal team wouldn’t be ready for trial by the scheduled May 5 date and pushed for an extension - something his colleagues strongly opposed. Unable to align with the team, Ricco allegedly chose to step away.
The exact reason behind his surprise departure remains unclear, as attorney-client privilege prevents him from revealing details.
In his filing, Ricco stated:
“Although I have provided Sean Combs with the high level of legal representation expected by the court, under no circumstances can I continue to effectively serve as counsel for Sean Combs.”
He also emphasized that his withdrawal will not delay the trial, which is still set for May 5.
Is Ricco Officially Off the Case?
Not yet. Ricco’s request to withdraw must be approved by a judge, who will determine whether his reasons are valid.
For now, he remains one of Diddy’s attorneys until the court grants his exit. However, given his firm stance, it is widely expected that he will no longer be part of Combs’ defense team moving forward.
What Does This Mean for Diddy’s Case?
With one of his key attorneys stepping down, Diddy’s legal defense could face significant challenges. The sudden shift raises questions about potential internal conflicts and what Ricco may have learned that led him to walk away.
