Wendy Day and the Rap Coalition Many fans know Eminem’s pivotal appearance at the 1997 Rap Olympics, but fewer are aware of Wendy Day’s early influence. Founder of the Rap Coalition, a nonprofit aimed at empowering rappers, Day first noticed Eminem while attending a music convention in Detroit, thanks to a tip from Chicago rapper Rhymefest. Though initially hesitant, Day was impressed by Eminem’s talent after hearing his demo and set out to help him get signed.

The Rap Olympics and Early Interest Day’s Rap Olympics was designed to spotlight talented lyricists, attracting A&R scouts to its 1997 event in Los Angeles. Eminem’s performance caught the attention of Interscope employees Evan Bogart and Dean Geistlinger, who, despite his loss in the final round, requested a demo from the discouraged rapper.
