Uncovering the Legacy of ‘Hip-Hop Hitlist’
While The Source, Rap Pages, and Ego Trip are well-known, Hip-Hop Hitlist was crucial in hip-hop’s early days, significantly contributing to the rise of DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince.
The First Hip-Hop Magazine: A Common Misconception
Many hip-hop enthusiasts might think of The Source, Rap Pages, and Ego Trip as the pioneering magazines of the genre. However, there's an often-overlooked publication that played a crucial role in hip-hop's early days: Hip-Hop Hitlist. This magazine was instrumental in launching DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince's career.
The Birth of Hip-Hop Hitlist
In the 1980s, three young men from New Jersey—Jae Burnett and brothers Vincent and Charles Carroll—founded Hip-Hop Hitlist. The magazine, which claimed to be the very first rap publication, was heavily supported by ads from major record labels, including Tommy Boy, Def Jam, Select, and Jive Records.
Ann Carli’s Role in Hip-Hop Journalism
In 1986, media personality and Jive Records Artist Development executive Ann Carli, also known as Tokyo Rose, began covering the burgeoning hip-hop scene. She wrote a rap gossip column for Hip-Hop Hitlist and reported on Tom Silverman’s influential New Music Seminar.
The Breakthrough of DJ Jazzy Jeff
During the seminar, Carli witnessed DJs showcasing their skills in a competition for the Battle for World Supremacy. DJ Jazzy Jeff from Philadelphia, an underdog among the mostly New York competitors, won the battle, with his musical partner, The Fresh Prince, cheering him on.
The Impact on Jive Records
Carli’s article about Jazzy Jeff's victory in Hip-Hop Hitlist caught the attention of Barry Weiss, who was tracking successful independent singles for Jive Records. Weiss used this strategy to discover and sign promising acts, eventually leading to contracts with DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, Schoolly D, and Steady B.
When The Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff met Carli at Jive Records, they were already familiar with her work and recited her Hip-Hop Hitlist article about Jeff’s victory. The article played a key role in launching their careers.
Recognizing Hip-Hop Hitlist’s Legacy
Reflecting on the past, it is essential to acknowledge Hip-Hop Hitlist’s significant impact. This early publication provided a vital platform for emerging artists, helped shape the genre, and documented pivotal moments in hip-hop history.
